As we historically have a strong connection to network technologies (not surprising, given the “NW” in “ERNW” stands for “Networks”), I developed a small script to create RFC-style ASCII representations of protocol schemes. The following listing shows an example created for a fictitious protocol:

Just a “FYI”. I have developed something similar, it prints existing protocols and user-defined ones. It provides a few options to modify the characters used in the diagram and also the width (useful for protocols not aligned to a 32-bit word boundary). Download and documentation available here:
